Gaggia 8002 MDF Coffee Grinder Review
The Classic Italian Made Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Coffee Grinder:
Review & FAQ
The Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder offers one of the best price-to-performance ratios for dedicated burr grinders. Built in the country that’s’ known for fine espresso
Gaggia of Italy produces some of the finest espresso machines in the world. In Italy they dominate nearly half of the espresso machine market. Gaggia espresso machines are known for their rugged and reliable construction, classic looks, and ease of use.
We recommend a Gaggia 8002 MDF to anyone who desires to sip upon fine espresso or cappuccino! Exquisitely brewed coffee starts with the grind. No matter how technically advanced your Espresso machine is it won’t matter if you don’t have the right source. “Garbage in, garbage out”, so the saying goes.
With that in mind, making sure that your coffee ground is at its best is almost half of the total brewing equation.
Who Is The Gaggia MDF Coffee Grinder Best For
The Gaggia MDF Grinder is an excellent buy for coffee enthusiasts at home who want quality and consistent grinds each and every time. Ideal for medium sized to large households, this burr grinder from Gaggia will be the perfect complement to your place and your Espresso machine.
The Gaggia MDF 8002 Looks and Feel.
The body of the Gaggia MDF Grinder is made of impact resistant plastic that helps in reducing noise during operation as well as add increased durability. With dimensions of 11.5″H x 4.5″W x 8.5″D, it is quite bigger when compared to more compact (and cheaper) dedicated grinders but sits nicely beside your Espresso maker in terms of overall size.
Tempered Steel Grinding Burrs and Heavy Duty Motor
When it comes to dedicated grinders, it is what’s inside that count. The MDF grinder is equipped with tempered steel that is 50 mm in diameter and is powered by a commercial strength 120-watt motor that simply let the grinder tear through the coffee beans with ease.
Thanks to a gear-reduction system and superb torque performance, the Gaggia 8002 MDF coffee grinder can handle high coffee volume without a hitch. To operate, simply press the ON button on the side and voila, your ground coffee is ready within seconds.
Commercial Grade Burrs
The 50mm grinding burrs inside the MDF grinder are made of durable tempered steel to provide years and years of service before needing replacement. The burrs turn at slow speeds resulting in better consistency in the grind. The burrs are also easily replaceable and available for an economical price.
Adjustable Grind Settings
The Gaggia8002 offers 34 degrees of fineness control over your grind. Simply turn the bean hopper to make adjustments from fine to coarse. This grinder is capable of grinding finely enough for Turkish coffee or coarse enough for French Press.
Want your grind ultra-fine for that delicate and smooth Cappuccino? Not a problem. Drip coffee you say? Set the dial to the coarse setting and you’ll be enjoying your home brew within minutes. This wide selection of grind settings is what makes Gaggia’s MDF grinder truly versatile in terms of depth and variety.
Thirty four is more than enough for fine-tuning your brews and this will ensure that you will have just the right setting for your taste. Simply turn the bean hopper to check and view your current grind setting through the easy-to-read display in front of the grinder.
Large Capacity Dosing Hopper System
The MDF 8002 does not have a grinds catch box for the ground coffee like many lower priced coffee grinders. Instead, it features a system commonly used in commercial machines called a doser. Coffee is ground into a chamber and a lever on the side of the machine is used to “dose” out specific volumes of ground coffee into the waiting portafilter.
Made up of tough plastic sporting a smoke black color, The MDF’s bean hopper is capable of accommodating up to 10 ounces of coffee beans.
The compartment is well made with tight tolerances to help keep the beans fresh. Tightly sealed at the top, this large capacity bean hopper will prevent air from coming in to maintain the freshness of the beans. On the other hand, once the grinding process is complete, freshly ground coffee will head straight to the dosing grinder.
With a simple pull on the plastic lever located at the side, coffee will dispense at 7-gram dosages per pull. One pull for a single shot and two pulls for a quick and strong double shot. The dosing grinder is able to hold up to 8 ounces of freshly ground coffee.
The 8002’s Overall Build and Construction
The Gaggia MDF 8002 coffee grinder is not your typical run-of-the-mill burr grinder. Built to last for years, you will surely get your money’s worth and cruise through years and years of consistent grinds without much hassle.
Heavy Duty Housing
The main body is made of cast metal, offering excellent durability while lowering the overall noise of the MDF grinder. The dosing lever, bean hopper, and ground coffee hopper are made of thick plastic.
Heavy Duty Motor
Gaggia didn’t skimp on the electric motor when designing this machine. It’s powerful motor provides plenty of strength to grind through any type of coffee bean from fine to the coarsest settings. A gear reduction system further refines the torque delivery of this grinder, adding to the overall durability and performance.
Gaggia MDF Grind Quality
The Gaggia 8002 coffee grinder impressed us throughout this review with its performance in churning out coffee that is very consistent, and can reach a level of fineness that will be suitable enough for Espresso.
The grind range of this machine is impressive and provides plenty of options to the user. Best of all though is that it is able to offer all of these without being too pricey. The MDF is comparable to many of the more expensive grinders, such as the Rancilio Rocky (the rocky is in the $350 to $400 price range) or the of Breville’s premium grinders….If you are looking for more options, have a read of all our coffee grinder reviews and guides.

Gaggia MDF Grinder Review Wrap Up
While not specifically the “Ultimate Burr Grinder”, our review found that the Gaggia MDF 5002 Grinder is close to being one, especially when you consider the years of service it can provide. If you are looking for a dedicated burr grinder to match your Espresso or Coffee maker, the Gaggia 8002 MDF might just be it. For brewing an espresso, it’s perfect. Nice even grind with enough settings to get just the coarseness you need for that perfect pull. The doser allows you to grind enough for several shots if friends are over. If you are just pulling shots for myself, then you only grind as much as you need, so dosing feature isn’t very useful in this case.

Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder FAQs
When should I clean My Gaggia MDF? & How should I clean my grinder?
This is a very easy process, which you can complete yourself.
It is a best practice to give your grinder a wipe down after each grind. For the end of grinding day you can use a grinder cleaning brush to sweep out the edges of the grinder. Periodically, you should clean the grinder more extensively to remove any old coffee that may be inside as well as any accumulated coffee oils and residues, a weekly cleaning a small vacuum and a more thorough cleaning is recommended.
What Grind Settings should I use on my Gaggia 8002 for French Press
You will need to go towards the coarse setting on the MDF, and then work your way finer until you get your desired french press grind.
How often do I have to get the blades sharpened
The burrs on the MDF cannot be resharpened, they are only replaceable. If the machine still grind consistently; the burrs do not need to be replaced.
How long do you grind with the Gaggia MDF to get the right amount of coffee?
You will use the grinder differently for entertaining than you would for just one person. When you are entertaining you will grind until the dosing section is full and pull the handle to dispense measured amounts. One pull for single shot, and two pulls for a double shot. Don’t worry about the ground coffee backing up into the grinder; it would overflow the ground coffee container first. If you are using it for just one person you should let the grinder operate for about 15 seconds and then start pulling the handle until you have enough coffee in your portafilter and then turn the grinder off. You don’t want to have extra coffee grounds sitting in the ground coffee container. When used like this you will not use the grinders dosing mechanism to measure the amount of ground coffee being dispensed you will just use it as a dispenser.
Troubleshooting The Gaggia 8002 MDF Grinder
The motor is on but nothing is being ground.
The reason the beans are not grinding is that they are stuck right above the grinding burrs so there is no need to take it apart. There is a round opening at the bottom of the bean hopper that the beans have to travel through to get to the burrs. Oily beans tend to stick together which makes it difficult for them to navigate their way down into the burrs. Turn off the grinder and slide a fork with the curved side facing in down along the inside of the bean hopper. When it gets to the opening where the beans are stuck it will loosen them up and the grinder will work normally. This in not unique to the MDF grinder and is a common problem that is easily remedied.
The dosing lever on the right side of the Gaggia MDF 8002 won’t retract all the way.
It sounds like the screw is coming loose on the doser mechanism Please read entire instructions below before starting.
