Cuisinart DGB-900BC Review (2017 Update)

Among low cost combination grinder and coffee makers on the market, we would have to say that we can still stand by our original review of Cuisinart’s DGB-900 burr grind & brew coffeemaker. Even with all the new grind and brew entries in the market, the DGB 900 is still worthy of your attention.

The “updated” Cuisinart’s DGB-900BC Burr Grind and Brew Coffeemaker Review

For years now Cuisinart has been producing high quality grind and brew coffee makers,…then inevitability, they start redesigning, discontinuing and finally releasing a “new and improved” replacement model. However for the most part Cuisinart has left the DGB 900BC alone for the last 14 years! The reason why is pretty simple, if it any broke don’t fix it!

Cuisinart shows us with the DGB900 how easy is it to have wonderful tasting coffee derived from freshly ground coffee beans. Simply place your favorite coffee beans into the coffee bean hopper, close the lid, and turn on the power. The grinder will immediately begin grinding the beans to the perfect consistency, then it will automatically dispense the grounds into the coffee basket. Brewing begins shortly thereafter. Convenient, great tasting coffee without the to much of a mess, in this tough little compact coffee maker. And you wish to use pre-ground (don’t know why you would ”want to” but it is sometimes unavoidable) coffee instead of whole coffee beans, all you need to do in order to disable the automatic, press one button.

Another very nice feature that many coffee makers in the same price range as the Cuisinart lack, is an adequate water dispersion showerhead over the coffee grounds. The shower-head In the in the DGB-900 manages to get the water pretty evenly dispersed over all of the grounds. The result is better flavor, better temperature of brewed coffee, and no wasted coffee grounds.

DGB-900BC Kitchen Aesthetics

Cuisinart produced the DGB900 model to suit almost any kitchen design. This coffee make has timelessly classic and handsome brushed stainless steel finish, and is paired with a matching stainless steel 10 cup double wall carafe. It sports an Italian design with subtle curves that creates the perfect look for most gourmet kitchen….There will be some counter tops that it may not “fit in” well with, but for the most part stainless on black is pretty much a kitchen stander with higher quality appliances.

Burr Coffee Grinder

The built-in conical burr grinder grinds beans consistently, and is easily one of the best feature of the 900, a burr is far superior then a blade grinder. Access is gained by lifting the lid on top. The grinding chamber is protected by a see-through plastic lid. Remove this to poor in your favorite coffee beans. It is recommended by Cuisinart that you remove the grinding chamber and rinse after each use. But, we found it could be left in place for several uses before rinsing under the faucet.

If you wish to use pre-ground coffee, you may disable the automatic feature of the grinder by pressing the grind disable button on the control panel.

The grind & brew DGB-900 coffee maker features a digital clock and timer control that allows for automatic brewing and grinding up to 24 hours in advance. You can program it to begin grinding your coffee beans and brewing the night before so you can wake up to a wonderful cup of coffee. Simply place your coffee beans into the grinder, put water in the reservoir, and set the timer. The grind and brew dgb900bc will take it from there. The timer will automatically turn the coffee maker off as well, and you can program this to occur in one hour increments up to four hours.

If you wish to make a smaller pot of coffee between 2-4 cups, the brewer has a feature that will ensure your coffee tastes as well as a full pot of coffee. The machine will double heat the small amount of water needed to ensure the coffee is as hot as that expected from a larger pot of coffee.

The anti-chlorine action of the charcoal water filter will give the coffee a more delicate flavor. Good coffee starts with good water. Each filter lasts for two months or 60 pots, and they are easily replaceable. The use of the filter is optional, as it is not required to brew coffee. It can be removed from the reservoir if you wish.

Brew Pause System

The dgb900-bc allows for removal of the carafe during mid brew for those who just can’t wait for the full pot! The filter basket automatically stops the coffee flow when the carafe is removed for up to 30 seconds without it dripping; resuming again once it is replaced.

This section below is our original review from June 18th 2014

Cuisinart DGB-900BC Review by Coffee Aficionado

It took me some time to decide on recommending the Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker. This is because of several complaints about the machine’s inability to come up with a strong coffee flavor.

If you want to read these customer Cuisinart reviews for yourself, through this Amazon link.

Upon further research we discovered several features of the coffee maker that still make it a good buy. This may not be our top recommendation but it still is worth an investment for coffee lovers, especially those who are not into strong-flavored coffee.

Keep in mind you can always use more beans to get stronger coffee. However our top choice remains to be the Keurig models .

One of the features of the Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew that is unique is the brew strength option. Through this you have the option to have strong or mild coffee; you can also enjoy the grind control feature which makes sure that your coffee beans are finely ground for more intense flavor or otherwise.

Sales are often available for the Cuisinart DGB-900BC over at Amazon, so please check out their website at this link for the best price.

The Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew also has a decent look to it as it is self-contained and you won’t be able to find some dangling parts from it, unlike some other coffee machines of this type.

Let’s take a good look on the features of the Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker:

  • Features a sleek black color with stainless steel finish
  • Has a double-wall insulated thermal carafe to keep coffee hot for longer, and also the built-in automatic burr grinder
  • Features strength selector that allows you to choose from strong, medium, or mild coffee
  • Has a grind control fine-tune intensity and volume
  • Measures 10-2/3 by 8-4/9 by 16-1/4 inches; 3-year limited warranty
  • If you want to buy the Cuisinart DGB-900BC, you will find the best price at Amazon through this link.

Moreover, this coffee machine also lets you enjoy a four-cup setting and can carry as much as twelve cups. This however raised a controversy whether the 12 cups measurement means the machine can work out 12 cups of strong coffee. Users have complained about the beans being coarsely ground. In that sense you need to grind more beans than should be required if they were ground more finely.

The thermal carafe also has a fine construction as it can help to keep your coffee warm even after an hour or more. However, the problem with the carafe is that it comes with a small spout and thus pours very thinly. Impatient coffee drinkers will feel it takes too long to pour a cup. Most users however find it helpful to lift the lid slightly to be able to pour out more.

There are also minimal complaints on bean spills for the Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic coffee machine. You’re not required to clean the grinder too often as well, but if you prefer to do so it won’t take more than a minute to clean everything and make the machine ready for next use.

Lastly, the machine makes it easy for you to use it since all the controls for coffee preferences on every pot are found in the front of it.

Let’s summarize some of the many advantages and disadvantages that the Cuisinart DGB-900BC Fully Automatic Burr Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker has

Pros:
  • Can accommodate up to 12 cups of servings
  • The double-wall insulated thermal carafe seals in heat, so you can have great-tasting coffee even up to the last cup
  • A Gold tone permanent filter and charcoal water filter that removes impurities
  • Perfectly brews coffee without the annoying sound
Cons:
  • Needs to be cleaned somewhat regularly, but not every day
  • Doesn’t know how much water you put in, so if you want to brew 2 cups of coffee but put 4 cups of water, it will process the 4 cups
  • The grind appears to be too coarse, and this makes it hard to brew very strong coffee unless you waste beans.
